Also called calcium hydroxide, hydrated lime exhibits more rapid neutralization than regular calcium carbonate limestone, due both to it’s chemical structure and a high surface area resulting from the powdered format. Hydrated lime causes a quick deflection in pH and is often incorporated into transplant beds prior to planting. It is also used in livestock bedding to reduce the smell of ammonia.
